Social Networking with SharePoint MySites

I posted a great example a few days ago on how Accenture is leveraging SharePoint Portal MySites to achieve some serious business value.  So what are "MySites", exactly?

MySites are a social networking solution that are included with Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal 2007 out of the box.  When MySites are turned on, employees will receive two flavors, a "public MySite" and a "private MySite" for each employee.  The public view is how all employees behind the firewall see and interact with that particular profile.  The private view is created for specific employee's eyes only.  In the screenshots below, I will attempt to call out some of the more common features.

MySite Public

The above picture demonstrates the MySite "Public View"

1 Julian Price is the MySite Owner.
2 "Welcome Andrea"  SharePoint is leveraging Single Sign On and Andrea is looking at Julian's public profile.
3 Information from the directory like phone number and job title.  This information can be locked down and Julian will not be able to modify it.
4 Detailed profile information.  Some of this information can be modified by Julian like his personal interests, and if he wants to modify skills, he has to choose from a list.  This prevents him from listing "stamp collecting" as a skill.
5 Work associates Andrea has in common with Julian.  Notice the instant messaging integration via the "pawn".  It looks as though some of the the colleagues are on-line because the icon is green.  Andrea could easily right click on one of the employees and start an IM conversation.
6 Distribution list memberships.  This is a great way to see what groups an employee belongs to.
7 Organization.  Andrea can easily see who Julian reports to and what manager they have in common.
8 Julian's contact information.  Andrea can see how to contact Julian and because of Microsoft Outlook integration, Andrea can see his free/busy information.
9 Andrea can read and subscribe to Julian's blog.
10 Andrea can see documents that Julian has decided to share and make public.

The below picture demonstrates the MySite "Private View"

MySite Private

1 Targeted news and content that Julian has selected.
2 "My Colleagues"  Contacts that Julian has classified by role.
3 Julian's Calendar.
4 Private documents and likes to team sites and other areas that Julian has set up.
